Procedures
Each child is expected to come to school prepared and ready to learn. As the students enter the room, they are to unpack all belongings and get busy on morning work or check the center chart to see where they will start their day. We have a variety of centers in the morning that have activities that support what we are learning. Some of our centers include: Math, Social Studies, Science, Writing, Phonics, Library, Computers, Art, and Games. The students rotate to a different center each day, and have Fridays as a "free choice" day.
Students follow the school-wide policy of "quiet hallways" and bathrooms.
Our motto for our learning time is "Work time is quiet time," in order to insure that all students can concentrate.
Rules:
1. Follow directions
2. Keep hands, feet, objects, and unkind remarks to yourself
3. Raise hand before speaking
4. Do not leave the room without permission
5. No talking or getting out of your seat during instructional time
Positive Reinforcements :
1. Praise, and lots of it!
2. Stickers
3. Scholar Dollars
4. Class prizes or extra recess
5. Positive notes/calls home
In my experience in the classroom, I have found that using clothespins for behavior reinforcement is the most effective. Many of you are very familiar with this system that has been used in the younger grades. The only difference is that at the 3rd grade level I have changed from using the "stoplight faces" to a more age appropriate square. Just as with the faces, the students will move their pin around the edge of the square to coordinate with their behavior.
Negative Consequences:
Upon distributing a behavior that is out of step with our class/school rules, your child will give their clothespin to the teacher for a "2nd chance" warning. IF the behavior continues, the child will begin moving their pin around the square as described below:
- Yellow = 5 mins out of recess
- Orange = 10 mins out of recess
-Blue = Silent lunch
-Red = Demerit
- Visit to the Principal's Office
This visual aid helps the student see where they are at, creates a visual deterent, and encourages them to stay on green.
** If your child goes past the 10 minutes out at recess, you will hear from me.
