Class information:
(This document is posted on the website and in the workbook assigned to each student.)
Procedures:
We will complete one section each week. The following is what will be expected of students:
Tuesday---Begin a new section. Read. Highlight the important portions of the text.
Thursday---Finish the reading. Finish classroom discussion. Homework assigned.
Friday---Check homework. Review as time allows. Quiz.
For the sake of efficiency, all weeks are autonomous. When a section is done, we move on to a new section and the previous one is graded and recorded. Makeup work will not be accepted after we being a new section. If the work is not handed in, a zero is earned. However, a student may simply be marked absent and that will not count for or against their average. In extraordinary circumstances (determined at my discretion), the student may be excused from the work.
Grading is divided into four parts each counting 25%:
Notes count as 25%. Notes are completed during class discussion. Students are to jot down answers to the discussion questions as we answer them in class. Notes are graded as complete or not.
Homework counts as 25%. At the end of each section is an exercise to review important concepts in the reading. Students are responsible to have this completed on Friday. It is an important way to prepare for the quiz. Homework is graded as complete or not.
Quiz grades count as 25%. A quiz will normally be given each Friday. Quizzes are always 15 questions although the format varies. Completing the homework and studying the highlighted portions of the text is excellent preparation for the quiz.
Unit tests count as 25%. Unit tests are more comprehensive and thus more difficult. A study sheet will be given to each student. This will be completed and checked in class before the unit test. If the student studies this, there should be no difficulty in earning a good grade. It is important to note that these tests are infrequent but count for 25%. It is very important for the student to be prepared for all unit tests as this will have a great impact on report grades.
Homework website Every effort is made to keep the web site up-to-date and linked to currently used handouts when possible. Specific information about current instruction and assignments will be found there.
Grading:
Failure to hand in work will result in a grade of zero.
Notes and homework are checked each Friday. Students who have completed the work will receive a 100%. Students have the responsibility to hand in the work during class or bringing it to me on their own before we begin a new section.
Quizzes and Unit tests are percentage grades.
Exceptions are determined by the teacher’s discretion:
If students are present the entire week it is very unlikely that any exception will be made.
Those who are absent most or all of the week (and have not completed the work) may be given an “absent”.
Students may be “excused’ from work at the teacher’s discretion. This will only be possible for a very good reason.
Students who are absent will be permitted to take the quiz or unit test at a later time.
It is my intention to be fair and equitable to all students. My decision in any particular case will take into consideration all pertinent variables for each individual.
The three-day schedule will have to be altered from time to time. Be sure to check the website for updated information.
