Class Rules and Discipline Policy

*Remember the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

*Enter the room quietly with a positive attitude. You may discover your hidden talent as you try a new instrument.

*Grades 6-8 should be prepared for each class with a pencil, paper, folder with notes, and any assignments you may need to turn in to me.  Grades 3-5 should bring recorders, pencils, and folders.

*Enjoy the quiet of the room and play your instrument only when invited to perform. Misuse of instruments will result in losing the privilege to play on that day.

*Middle school students who disrupt the class will receive a warning. If the behavior persists, a quiet lunch or demerit will be the consequence of that behavior.

Class rules:

  1. Follow directions.
  2. Bring your materials to class.
  3. Keep hands, feet, objects and unkind remarks to yourself.
  4. Raise your hand to speak.
  5. Have a good attitude.

Class Descriptions

Students in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade work mostly with the mallet instruments and the rhythm instruments. The recorder is introduced in 3rd grade and students perfect their skills on this instrument in 4th and 5th grade as well.  Guitar is presented to the 6th grade students and they will continue to use this instrument in their 7th and 8th grade years. We all sing and learn to read music. All students are involved in planning and participating in their Special Liturgies. Students learn about different composers, musical styles, and experience a variety of instruments. I have fun with the classes and I enjoy hearing their progress from week to week.

Every class sings and plays instruments.

CHOIR

The Choir practices from 3:00-3:45 each Wednesday in the Music room. This is open to students in grades 3-8. We will start our first practice on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

GUITAR

Over 65 HRA students were involved with guitar lessons this summer.

Remember to practice each day.  I hope you will share your talent at weekday Mass or at the 3rd Sunday Youth Mass.  If your guitar needs tuning, please bring it to my classroom and I will tune it for you.

All 6th, 7th and 8th grade students learn to play the guitar in our weekly music class.

Youth Mass

The 3rd Sunday of each month is the Youth Mass. We meet at 11:00 in the church to get organized for the 11:30 Mass. Students in grades 5-12 from HRA and Holy Rosary CCD are involved with the music, readings, offertory, and serving.

Classwork and Homework guidelines:

Recorder students are encouraged to practice about 10 minutes each evening.  HRA purchases the recorders for 3rd grade students and new students.  New recorders may be purchased for $5.00.  Daily grades will be affected  if a student does not bring the recorder to clsss.

Students are required to have a music folder for study sheets and sheet music. Middle school students are tested regularly during the year on their knowledge of music terms, composers, instruments, theory, and history.  Materials for Middle School class are: a folder with pockets, a pencil or erasable pen, and paper.  Daily grades are affected if students are unprepared.

Middle school students will have a project this year. More details later.

Student Projects and Classroom Happenings:

The students who visit this room have been very generous in adding coins and dollars to "the giving jar".  Last year we helped a family from the Catholic Charities Angel Tree with the money we have collected.  We also donate money to families in need throughout the year.

Special Liturgy Report

The 8th graders are working on their Special Liturgy.  We have chosen the theme "God Has Called Us by Our Name".  Every student participates in a special way and all the parents are invited to their 8:00 Mass on Thursday, Sept. 25
